I had no idea what boundaries were until graduate school. I’d never even heard the word—which is mind-blowing today. You can’t get on Instagram without seeing like ten different posts about boundaries. So, most people have at least heard the word “boundary,” but many still don’t really understand what boundaries are.

Embracing the Shoulds

I think it was one of my professors in graduate school that said “stop ‘shoulding’ all over yourself.” Hearing this was revolutionary for me, because at that time I hadn’t realized how much and how often I was “shoulding” on myself. It was a lot. Like, pretty much all the time. And often when I’d tell myself I should be doing XYZ, I didn’t end up actually doing the thing I was telling myself that I should do, I just felt guilty or ashamed for not being the way that I thought I should be.

Fear of Emotions

Most of us didn’t grow up learning how to relate to our emotions. In fact, most of us didn’t grow up talking much about our emotions at all. But that doesn’t mean we didn’t learn lessons about them. We learned plenty of lessons. Most of them just weren’t consciously or intentionally imparted upon us, and like most things that aren’t consciously and intentionally chosen, the messages we received were shaped by unexamined baggage.
