Holistic Therapy and Coaching for Childhood Trauma in Kansas and Colorado
People come to work with me for all kinds of reasons. It might be persistent anxiety and difficulty putting themselves first, or low self-esteem and dissatisfying relationships, or body image issues. The specific symptoms that lead my clients to reach out for the first time vary widely, but almost everyone that comes to me for counseling shares one thing in common: they typically have an intuitive sense that whatever they are experiencing today is linked to unresolved issues from the past.
What is Relational Trauma? What is Complex PTSD?
Relational trauma is trauma that happens within the context of relationships. The most impactful relational trauma usually happens within our families growing up. This kind of relational trauma is also called developmental trauma. Growing up in a dysfunctional family system can lead to a specific kind of PTSD called Complex PTSD. Trauma becomes complex when experienced over a long period of time and when there's no hope for escape from the situation. Complex PSTD is common in adults who grew up in dysfunctional families because the trauma was ongoing and inescapable. Developmental trauma is often subtle and covert. Sometimes people don't even realize that their family growing up was dysfunctional because the dysfunction is all they ever knew. Relational trauma can also occur in dysfunctional adult relationships as well. It is common for those who have experienced childhood trauma to unconsciously recreate similar dynamics in adult relationships. |
My Approach to Healing Childhood Trauma
My therapeutic approach is holistic and relational. Much of healing childhood trauma involves reconnecting with and repairing our relationship with our body. I help my clients learn to feel safe and grounded in their bodies.
Childhood trauma happens in unsafe relationships, and therefore, childhood trauma has to be healed in the context of safe relationships. I create a safe space for you to go back and heal what needs to be healed, so that you no longer have to carry the burdens of your past in a way that interferes with your ability to be at ease in the present.
Ultimately, when we heal childhood trauma, we heal our attachment with ourselves. We learn to trust ourselves again, or perhaps trust ourselves for the first time. To trust that no matter what happens we will not abandon ourselves during difficult moments. My clients come to trust that they are fully capable of showing up and holding compassionate space for their own fear and pain.
Through therapy I help my clients deepen their relationship with themselves and deepen their self-compassion, so they can stop unconsciously perpetuating old scripts and traumas from the past.
